John Gagliardi, the highly successful football coach at St. John's University in Minnesota, learned an important lesson in leadership from his mother's philosophy about-spaghetti. His wife had admired her mother-in-law's recipe for the Italian dish and tried to learn it by watching the older woman cook. But she soon noticed that her mother-in-law made her spaghetti with different ingredients and combinations every time, though it always turned out delicious. When asked about this, the coach's mother simply said, "Well, that's what I had in the house." Cooking, like leading, is a matter of bringing out the best in whatever-or whomever-you have with you.
