According to J Herbert Kane in Wanted World Christians on page 39 we get the following distinctions as to the first, second, and third world terms.
The First World includes the United States and its allies. The Soviet Union and its allies form the Second World. The remaining nations are usually lumped together as the Third World. The phrase was first used at the Bandung Conference in 1955 and has been used ever since.
