What is a synagogue
was a gathering of Jews to worship. The requirement was for a minimum of 10 men to be present. A Jewish boy at the age of 13 was counted a man--not in the sense of government responsibility, nor getting married etc but in being responsible for his behavior, sin, keeping the commandments, etc.
the word also referred to the house of assembly or the gathering or assembly for the worship of God.
the synagogue was a house of prayer, a house of study, and many other functions.
good information
By the way I have spent a lot to time today reading from this page and you might find it very interesting.
